Madison –Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz and Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk request nominations for the annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award.  Both the City and the County have long histories of over 25 years of honoring deserving individuals who demonstrate leadership and commitment to promoting peace, understanding and communication between diverse populations.

“A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus,” said Dr. King.  Each of the Humanitarian Award winners will follow that model.  Two Humanitarian Awards will be presented:  one for Young Leaders (ages 13-19) and one for Humanitarians (ages 20 and above). The nomination deadline is December 17, 2010 by 4:30 pm.

“Each year we are encouraged and uplifted by the virtues of the Humanitarian Award winners.”  County Executive Kathleen Falk said.  “On this—the twenty-fifth anniversary of the award—I look forward to honoring our best and brightest inspirational leaders.”

Nominees should have demonstrated leadership while making significant contributions to increasing communication and peace among our communities.  Nomination application and criteria is attached.  You may also access online applications and nominee criteria at: http://www.countyofdane.com/unified/award/MLKAward.aspx as well as at: www.cityofmadison.com/dcr/commMLK.cfm.

“Our community’s commitment to social justice and activism is well-represented by recipients of this award,” Mayor Dave Cieslewicz. “I encourage all of us to recognize those who have shown a deep commitment to making our community a better place.”

The City and County will present the awards at the 25th Annual City-County Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance on Monday, January 17th, at the Overture Center Capital Theater, 201 State Street, Madison.  The program begins at 6:00 p.m.
