County Leaders Highlight the Work and Impact of Dane County Emergency Management

Dane County – Today, County Executive Melissa Agard proclaimed August 2026 as National Emergency Management Awareness Month, underscoring the critical role that Dane County Emergency Management (DCEM) plays in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from emergencies and disasters throughout the region.

Emergencies can occur with little to no warning. Dane County Emergency Management works year-round to reduce risks and strengthen community resilience. Through comprehensive planning, coordination, training, and public education, DCEM helps ensure that residents, businesses, and local governments are equipped with the tools needed to recover from emergency events, such as severe thunderstorms, flooding, winter storms, and tornadoes. 

“Emergency management isn’t something that happens only when disaster strikes,” said County Executive Melissa Agard. “It is the daily, behind the scenes work of preparedness and mitigation that embodies the Dane County Way of commitment to the community and looking out for our neighbors.”

Dane County Emergency Management serves as a central hub for countywide preparedness and response. The department works closely with municipal partners, first responders, schools, nonprofits, state agencies, and federal authorities to strengthen our county’s ability to respond to emergency situations.
