County Board Overrides Veto of Alliant Energy Center Planning Resolution

                    Master Planning Process Will Move Forward, Engage Community

 

The Dane County Board of Supervisors, by a vote of 30 to 6, has overridden County Executive Joe Parisi’s veto of a resolution calling for a planning process to determine the future of the Alliant Energy Center (AEC).

 

"The Alliant Energy Center is a treasured agricultural and entertainment space, and today the Dane County Board re-affirmed our commitment to ensuring a strong, sustainable AEC for the next 50 years," said County Board Chair Sharon Corrigan. "As we have begun to recover from the Great Recession, now is the time for a master planning process that builds on the hard work of our staff, while engaging the neighborhood, community leaders, and industry experts." 

 

“In developing a master plan, we need to position ourselves for further success, while addressing long-term infrastructure needs,” said Supervisor Jeff Pertl, chair of the Personnel and Finance Committee.   “A partnership with the City of Madison or creation of ?an entertainment district could open up the door to exciting new growth opportunities and sustainable revenue that could support the AEC. At a minimum, we need to carefully consider all the options.”

 

“It is essential that the neighbors and the neighborhood surrounding the Alliant Energy Center have a meaningful master planning process that includes all neighbors’ input,” said Supervisor Shelia Stubbs, who represents the district where the AEC is located. “Oftentimes communities are left behind. I thank my County Board colleagues for not letting that happen this time.”

 

“The Alliant Energy Center sits on one of the most valuable properties in Dane County,” said Supervisor Robin Schmidt, chair of the Public Works and Transportation Committee. “We need this planning process to determine the highest and best use of that property for the greatest benefit for the community and the taxpayer.”

 

It is the first override of a Parisi veto. The last time the County Board overrode a veto was in 2009.
