Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk announced today the public will have improved access to one of the premier trout streams in the country starting this spring.  The county has secured a streambank easement along the West Branch of the Sugar River in the Town of Primrose.

“In the dead of winter with all this record cold, the prospect of casting a line into some of the best fishing waters around makes it a little easier to think spring,” Falk said.  “With so much uncertainty about people’s jobs and the economy this purchase is really another low-cost, close to home getaway for families looking to enjoy Dane County’s great outdoors.”

Falk noted the new public easement not only creates permanent trout fishing access but will also help protect the quality of the Sugar River and improve wildlife and fish habitat in the area.

Purchase of the 66-foot easement will be covered by funds from the Dane County Land and Water Legacy Fund.  The easement is being purchased on land owned by Glenn Reynolds.

The easement is part of the West Branch of the Sugar River identified as a Tier I Stream Project Area in the Dane County 2006-2011 Parks and Open Space Plan.

Signs will be posted to direct people to the new public fishing areas.
