Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk today announced that the contract for remodeling and constructing the final phase of a new terminal building for Dane County Regional Airport will go to Oscar J. Boldt Construction, a division of The Boldt Company, Appleton. Boldt will act as general contractor for Phase Three of the project, which calls for a three-story, 53,000 square foot concourse addition and remodeling another 57,000 square feet of the existing airport terminal building. Boldt submitted the lowest bid of $15.8 million. “Our airport continues to do well despite the national trends in air traffic,” said Falk. “The airport has a handsome Prairie School design, but just as impressive is the technology and efficiency built into the plans. A first-rate airport is a powerful economic development tool, and that is exactly what we will have.” The architect for the airport is Architectural Alliance based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Boldt project managers say they will hire local subcontractors and use area skilled labor, many of which are working on the current Phase Two construction project at the airport. The project will feature building a new concourse on the south end of the complex that will add two gates to the existing nine gates at the airport, bringing the total to 11 jetways. Two ground level commuter gates will also be constructed. The concourse will feature a glass curtain wall overlooking the air side of the airport and expanded customer seating. The remodeling portion of the project includes expanding the food court and retail areas on the second floor of the airport and includes enhancing external landscaping and providing more outdoor seating in public areas. When the third and final phase is completed, the terminal will double in size, to 280,000 square feet. Significant to the project is Boldt’s commitment to job-site recycling. Materials discarded in the demolition process will be separated according to wood products, wallboard, concrete, masonry, metals and other products. Boldt project engineers will recycle as much of the material as possible rather than hauling it to landfills. The project incorporates “green building” sustainable design and construction measures, such as recycled carpet, acoustic ceiling tiles manufactured from recycled soda bottles, non-toxic wood preservative treatment, chlorine free vinyl wallcovering, and on-site construction waste recycling. The Dane County Regional Airport receives no county tax subsidy. The county is issuing general obligation bonds for the project, which the airport will repay with airport revenues. This project will begin construction on May 1, 2004 and is scheduled for completion in July of 2005, according to Airport Director Bradley Livingston. The Boldt Company is a Wisconsin-based corporation with construction operations in nine offices across the United States including Madison. # # # # # # # # # #
