MADISON — Dane County Executive Melissa Agard has signed the 2025–2030 Dane County Parks & Open Space Plan, a comprehensive roadmap that will guide conservation, recreation, and public access priorities over the next five years.

“This plan reflects our values as a community – protecting open spaces, preserving natural resources, and ensuring everyone has the opportunity to enjoy Dane County’s parks and trails,” said County Executive Melissa Agard. “We’re laying the groundwork today for a healthier, more equitable, and more sustainable future.”

The Parks & Open Space Plan identifies key environmental corridors for protection, sets priorities for expanding recreational opportunities, and outlines strategies to partner with local governments and conservation organizations. It also places a strong focus on equity and ensuring park investments benefit all Dane County residents.

Dane County currently manages over 15,000 acres of parkland, along with hundreds of miles of trails, streams, and natural areas. The new plan builds on that legacy with a vision for growing access, enhancing stewardship, and expanding conservation partnerships throughout the region.

“From lakefront parks to quiet hiking trails, these spaces are essential to our quality of life,” Agard said. “With this plan, we’re not just protecting land – we’re investing in community well-being and environmental health for generations to come. I’m grateful to the Dane County Parks staff and the Park Commission for their work on this plan.”
