DANE COUNTY—County Executive Melissa Agard today recognized July as Disability Pride Month in Dane County, celebrating the leadership, resilience, and contributions of individuals with disabilities in our community. She also reaffirmed the county’s ongoing commitment to advancing accessibility, inclusion, and opportunity for residents of all abilities.
“Disability Pride Month is a time to celebrate the dignity and strength of people with disabilities, and to recommit ourselves to breaking down barriers - both physical and systemic - that stand in the way of full participation,” said County Executive Agard. “In Dane County, we believe that access is a right, not a privilege, and we are proud to lead with that value in everything we do.”
Dane County continues to prioritize access across county government. Through the Department of Human Services, the county provides individualized support and community-based services that help people with disabilities live independently and with dignity. This includes employment assistance, case management, in-home support, and respite care.
The county also invests in physical accessibility through its Parks Division, ensuring that trails, fishing piers, restrooms, and shelters are accessible to all residents. From adaptive kayak launches to ADA-compliant playgrounds and paved paths, Dane County Parks’ designs spaces to welcome individuals and families of all abilities.
“As we celebrate Disability Pride Month, we also recognize that accessibility is not a one-time achievement, it’s a continuous responsibility,” said Agard. “We will keep listening, learning, and making improvements to ensure that Dane County is a place where everyone belongs and everyone can thrive.”
