Wisconsin River Recreational Bridge & Trail Connection Celebration: Bridging Communities, Building Trails
SAUK CITY - On Thursday, May 8, government leaders and businesses from Dane and Sauk Counties, alongside national, state and local dignitaries, came together to celebrate the construction that is underway for the Wisconsin River Recreational Bridge and Trail. The construction of this bridge, where a railroad bridge once spanned the Wisconsin River, represents a significant step towards linking two trails: the Great Sauk State Trail and the future Walking Iron Trail in Dane County.
"This project is a shining example of what we can accomplish when communities work together with a shared vision.” said Dane County Executive Melissa Agard. “Dane County is proud to be a partner in this project."
The trail connection celebration was also an official stop for the Wisconsin Department of Tourism team as part of “National Tourism Week” celebrating the state’s hospitality and travel industry.
“The Wisconsin River Recreational Bridge stands as a testament to our commitment to community health, environmental stewardship, county-wide economic growth and the rich heritage of our region,” says Heidi Koch, Sauk City Village Administrator. “This bridge’s reconstruction, both in structure and spirit, reflects the extensive collaboration and planning among diverse stakeholders who have worked together toward this goal for over two decades.”
“Today marks a pivotal moment in enhancing regional connectivity and fostering outdoor recreation for our communities,” states Tim McCumber, Chair of the Sauk County Board of Supervisors. “This bridge's reconstruction will not only improve access for trail enthusiasts but also solidifies the vital link between Sauk and Dane Counties.”
Dane County is currently designing the future Walking Iron Trail, a 3-mile rail-to-trail conversion stretching from the bridge to an existing Wisconsin DNR parking lot on State Highway 78. Planned improvements include a 10-foot-wide trail, reconstruction of seven existing bridges, and enhancements to the trailhead parking lot. Construction of the future Walking Iron Trail is expected to begin as the Wisconsin River Recreational Bridge construction is wrapping up.
