MADISON – As communities around the globe prepare to honor Earth Month, County Executive Melissa Agard is celebrating the bold, innovative work happening locally in Dane County to protect our environment and strengthen our connection to the natural world.

“Dane County is proud to be a national leader in environmental protection, climate action, and conservation,” said County Executive Agard. “Our residents value clean air, clean water, and access to beautiful, well-preserved natural spaces. It’s part of what makes Dane County not only a wonderful place to live, but a fast-growing, forward-looking community.”

From county parks and thriving prairies to protected wetlands and clean lakes, Dane County’s commitment to environmental stewardship is visible in every corner of our region. The Land and Water Resources Department (LWRD) plays a critical role in preserving these resources. Their work—ranging from shoreline restoration and stormwater management to protecting wildlife habitats and supporting sustainable agriculture—ensures that future generations can enjoy these natural spaces.

Complementing these efforts, the Dane County Office of Energy and Climate Change (OECC) continues to lead on clean energy innovation and climate resilience. From advancing carbon neutrality goals to supporting community solar, energy efficiency, and environmental justice, OECC is helping position Dane County at the forefront of the fight against climate change.

“People want to live in a place that reflects their values,” Agard added. “Families and businesses are choosing Dane County because we invest in our environment. We’re building a sustainable future where everyone has access to clean water, healthy air, and safe, vibrant green spaces.”

Throughout Earth Month, Dane County will be celebrating local environmental champions, highlighting ongoing conservation work, and encouraging residents to get involved—whether it’s by volunteering, planting trees, or learning more about how to reduce their own carbon footprint.

“Earth Month is a time to reflect on our progress, recommit to our goals, and take action together,” said Agard. “I’m incredibly proud of the work our team is doing and excited for what’s ahead.”
