MADISON - Dane County Executive Melissa Agard announced today her administration’s pursuit of international designation for the Dane County Regional Airport (DCRA), a transformative step aimed at expanding global connectivity, driving economic growth, and bolstering tourism in the region.

“With record-breaking travel numbers and growing demand for expanded air service, achieving international designation for Dane County Regional Airport is the logical next step in ensuring our community remains a hub for business, travel, and economic opportunity,” said County Executive Agard. “This effort will enhance our ability to attract international visitors, support local businesses, and strengthen Madison’s position on the global stage.”

DCRA welcomed 2.35 million passengers in 2024, marking the second-highest year in airport history. The resurgence in air travel has reaffirmed the airport’s role as a key economic driver for the region, contributing to increased tourism, business investment, and job creation. International designation would further expand opportunities for business and leisure travelers alike.

Key Benefits of International Designation:

  • Strengthening Madison’s Global Reach: International status would position Madison as a competitive destination for business and leisure travel, attracting global visitors and investors.

  • Boosting Economic Growth: Increased international travel would lead to higher tourism spending at hotels, restaurants, and local businesses, further stimulating the regional economy.

  • Enhancing Trade & Business Opportunities: Improved access for international companies and trade partners would support local businesses and drive economic expansion.

  • Improving Customs & Security Efficiency: The establishment of U.S. Customs & Border Protection facilities at DCRA would streamline international travel, benefiting both passengers and cargo operations.

“Expanding our airport’s capabilities to handle international flights aligns with our commitment to smart growth and economic development,” added Agard. “This initiative will open new doors for our community, reinforcing Madison and Dane County as premier destinations for innovation, tourism, and global business.”

The County Executive’s office will work closely with state and federal partners, aviation officials, and the business community to advance this initiative and position Dane County Regional Airport for long-term success. The Dane County Regional Airport is in the midst of a national search for a new Airport Director after current Director Kim Jones announced she will retire in April.
