Madison, WI – Today, Dane County Executive Melissa Agard recognizes the start of Black History Month 2025, celebrating the profound contributions of Black individuals and communities in Dane County. This month serves as an opportunity to honor the achievements, resilience, and leadership of Black residents, while also acknowledging the historical and ongoing racial disparities that demand our collective action and commitment to justice.
“The Black community in Dane County plays an essential role in shaping our shared history, culture, and progress. From leaders in government and education to artists, entrepreneurs, and advocates, Black residents have strengthened our communities and enriched our lives,” said County Executive Agard. “However, we must also recognize the systemic barriers and racial inequities that persist. True celebration of Black history requires us to confront injustices, address disparities, and work towards a future where equity is not just an aspiration but a reality. This involves working tirelessly year-round, not only during Black History Month.”
Dane County remains steadfast in its efforts to advance racial equity, support Black-owned businesses, and ensure that all residents have access to the opportunities and resources they deserve. The Tamara D. Grigsby Office of Equity and Inclusion plays a crucial role in this mission, fostering policies and initiatives that promote fairness, diversity, and meaningful inclusion throughout Dane County.
“The Tamara D. Grigsby Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI) continues to lead the way in making Dane County a more just and equitable place for all,” Agard continued. “This work is critical in addressing racial disparities, promoting social justice, and ensuring that our policies and practices reflect the values of fairness and opportunity for every community member. I thank them for their continued efforts in making Dane County a better place to live, work, and recreate”
Throughout Black History Month, County Executive Agard encourages residents to participate in local events, engage in meaningful conversations, and take actionable steps toward a more inclusive future. By recognizing the achievements and challenges of Black residents, we reaffirm our shared commitment to building a county where everyone can thrive.
