County Board Recognizes National Hispanic Heritage Month

At last night’s Board meeting, the Dane County Board of Supervisors recognized a resolution for September 15 through October 15 to be National Hispanic Heritage Month. The significance of September 15 relates to the anniversary of the independence of five Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. National Hispanic Heritage Month also encompasses Mexico’s Independence Day on September 16 and the independence of Chile on September 18.

Hispanic culture and perspectives are significant in Dane County. Seven percent of Dane County residents identify as Latinx, and Spanish language is the second most common language in Dane County. 

“The Hispanic and Latinx communities contribute so much to Dane County,” said Supervisor April Kigeya (District 15), who presented the resolution last night. “Their vibrant heritage, their many accomplishments in the face of adversity, and their continued fight for unity are inspiring for us all.”

The Dane County Board of Supervisors encourages residents and organizations to participate in events and activities that honor Hispanic heritage and promote greater understanding and inclusivity year-round, but from now until October 15 especially.
