Dane County Board Recognizes National Week Without Driving

September 05, 2024
County Board Supervisor Richelle Andrae, (414) 469-6664
County Board

At the Dane County Board meeting tonight, the County Board will recognize a resolution designating September 30 through October 6 as National Week Without Driving. The week serves to bring awareness to the difficulties of navigating society without reliable transportation, various transportation options, as well as the environmental benefits of reducing reliance on personal vehicles.

According to data collected by the Dane County Climate Action Plan, an estimated 29% of Dane County’s carbon emissions are sourced from transportation. The resolution also highlights county-led efforts to improve accessibility to public resources, and permanent options for virtual Board and Committee meeting engagement for the public. In particular, the resolution draws attention to challenges for non-drivers and calls for continued efforts to center non-driver experiences.

"A Week Without Driving is an excellent opportunity to bring more attention to the limitations of relying on personal vehicles in Dane County,” said Supervisor Andrae (District 11). “So many individuals currently navigate work, life, and play through more environmentally-friendly methods like buses and bikes, but not everyone has the same opportunity to do so. We are slowly moving toward a more inclusive community when it comes to transportation, but significant work remains. Please join me in testing out alternative, community-based methods during A Week Without Driving!"

The resolution indicates that the Board encourages Dane County residents to participate in National Week Without Driving if able by using other means of transportation, such as biking, rolling, or walking.
