COUNTY BOARD CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM INITIATIVES COMMITTEE BEGINS WORK

February 06, 2023
County Board Supervisor Anthony Gray, (608) 354-7122
County Board

Last week the Dane County Criminal Justice Reform Initiatives Committee held the first meeting.  At the meeting, County Board Supervisor Anthony Gray (District 14) was elected Chair and County Board Supervisor Kierstin Huelsemann (District 27) was elected Vice Chair.

The 2023 Dane County operating budget included a budget amendment to establish a committee to review previous resolutions regarding criminal justice reform and reports by JFA Institute, as well as to compare other national best or promising practices with Dane County’s current practice.

Based on its review, the committee will make recommendations to the County Board on the allocation of $500,000 for justice reform initiatives in the Office of Criminal justice Reform.

“This committee is going to play an important role in reviewing the recommendations that have been made over the last few years.  While we won’t be able to move all of them forward, this is an important step in making meaningful change in our criminal justice system,” said Supervisor Gray.

The Committee includes five County Board Supervisors: Supervisor Gray, Supervisor Kigeya, Supervisor Huelsemann, Supervisor Hynes, and Supervisor Pellebon.  The amendment envisions the committee completing the work by July 2023.

The Committee will meet on the second Wednesday of each month at 5:30pm.  The next meeting is on February 8th.  The agenda can be found here: https://dane.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=A&ID=1080366&GUID=612702C5-A025-499D-8E37-497459CFC64B
