COUNTY BOARD TO MEET IN PERSON FOR FIRST TIME IN TWO YEARS

June 02, 2022
County Board Chair Patrick Miles, (608) 886-9167
County Board

The Dane County Board of Supervisors will meet in-person tonight at 7:00pm for the first time in more than two years following the transition to virtual meetings due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The fully in-person meeting will take place at the Alliant Energy Center, 1919 Alliant Energy Center Way, Mendota Rooms 1-4. While tonight’s meeting will only have an in-person option, future Board meetings will be conducted in a hybrid format with a virtual and in-person option for members of the public.

"The pandemic has forced us to do business in different ways, including how we hold meetings. I am eager for the next phase of public meetings that will allow us to have in-person discussion and debate, while also realizing that we are still in a pandemic and need to remain flexible and accessible to the public," said County Board Chair Patrick Miles.

At the meeting the County Board will recognize June 2022 as LGBTQ+ Pride Month in Dane County. The resolution notes that Pride Month is a time to reflect on the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in the past, recognize the progress that has been made, and acknowledge the bravery of those who fought and continue to fight for LGBTQ+ equality and rights.

"With the ever changing world, pride means different things to different people.  With that in mind, it was important to take a look at where we are as citizens and where we stand as a County on June 1, 2022 and recognize and celebrate the full spectrum of the Queer Community.  That includes LGBTQ+ folks and our allies.  We couldn't do it without all the myriad of gay-respecting businesses, organizations, friends and family that lie within our borders.  At the same time we want to share with the world that Dane County is a welcoming, friendly, supported inclusive community which fights the good fight for those who aren't always heard or respected," said County Board Supervisor Rick Rose (District 16).

The County Board will also recognize June 3, 2022 as National Gun Violence Awareness Day. The resolution indicates that more than 110 Americans are killed with guns every day and that 45,222 firearm deaths occurred in 2020 in the United States, which is 13.7% more than traffic deaths that occurred in the United States that year.

"Gun violence is a growing public health crisis in our country and our community.  We need to continue to work on programs that will reduce gun violence," said County Board Supervisor Chuck Erickson (District 23).  "June 3rd is an important day to bring awareness of this issue, however, we need to bring awareness of this issue all of the other days of the year.  I’m pleased we are supporting Public Health Madison and Dane County in its efforts to reduce violence in our community."

Additionally, the Board will also be recognizing June 15, 2022 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Dane County as well as the important of the Alice in Dairyland program to the agriculture industry.
